Space Kick — streetwear sneaker

An innovative progression of the “dad shoe,” “ugly sneaker” or “chunky outsole” streetwear trend.

Design
Thick outsole exploration with a fusion of simple, minimalist design and an edge of structure and segmentation. This footwear trend worked as the perfect canvas for a brand to reflect its true values without limiting itself.

Exploration
We started with pebbled, more rounded forms. The outsole was 3D printed, and the test upper was crafted to visualize the shoe’s true proportions. The design eventually evolved into a more geometric, directional look.

Geometry
Straighter lines that divided the outsole and upper into abstract sections brought us into new forms. Then, magic ensued in the harmony between horizontal and vertical lines that satisfyingly divided the upper.

Flexibility
Based on a basic linear sketch, we knew the faceted sculptural look would work well for us. We conceptualized an edgy outsole offset by a subtle, knitted elastic upper where the outsole steals the show.

Uppers
A key part of the development was testing different types of uppers with our outsole. This would be our foundation for new seasonal categories, so we had to be certain this outsole would visually perform well with simple sock uppers as well as more technical, intricate uppers.

Tooling
After several rounds of 3D printing and outsole testing, the factory helped us strike a balance between pricing for tooling and the number of parts the outsole would consist of.

Upper materials
We decided upon a combination of materials and construction styles for the upper. Our first factory sampling round featured more basic colors.

Visualisation
Demonstrating the design intent with highly realistic 3D renderings was instrumental in moving the project forward.

Prototypes
Several rounds of uppers were crafted and put on SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) - 3D printed outsole painted in black. This acted as a visual constant for testing our different design variables.

CMF
We aimed to strike a balance between seasonally relevant colors, staple brand accents and tones that the new target audience would appreciate (subtle shades x fresh accents linked to active/streetwear themes).

Production
To carefully test the waters for the first drop, we used more simplified upper designs and colors: monochromatic browns and black tones. The second batch explored more daring color accents.

Evolution
Fresher, bolder, more daring colorways were eventually introduced to supplement the new sneaker category.

Femme
After a positive reception from the men’s demographic, consumers sparked a demand for a women’s version. A taller design featuring an opened summer upper and velcro strap closure was introduced.
