Rolls Royce X Viktoria Modesta

Viktoria Modesta is an bionic artist, performer and singer that uses various different art forms to promote her artistic point of view. She uses her prosthetic leg as a canvas for creative expression. This project was completed as a promotion for new Rolls Royce model line Black Badge.

Design
Viktoria had designed her entire look for this promotional video. We were tasked with designing and engineering the shoe.

Upper
Viktoria chose a feminine upper, with an elegant topline. The upper was based on a popular shoe from within the commercial line. The shape was picked from the moodboard that guided the art direction of her outfit.

Wedge
The challenge was in placing electrical components such as coils, batteries, and a circuit board. Hoping to shoot electrical impulses into her prosthetic leg.

Concepts
A wild range of concepts were proposed based on the direction and design elements of the Rolls Royce Black Badge.

Final version
Before getting the green light to move onto sampling and engineering, the shoe was modeled and visualized based on all the technical requirements discussed with Viktoria and the Rolls Royce marketing team.

Engineering
As one of the wedges was supposed to carry a high-powered coil controlled by the circuit board, we had to make sure the materials of the shoe could not carry electricity.

Shoemaking
We were able to get functional and wearable samples within a short time frame. The wedge and the other parts were printed with Shapeways in NYC, and shipped to Hong Kong where the shoe was completed and wear-tested.

Final assembly
Over the period of two months, the shoe was shipped to an electrical engineer in Austin, TX for electrical components. Then later shipped to Los Angeles where it was tested and prepped for the video shoot. For complex project like this, it was very quick turnaround

Video shoot
It was necessary for the design team to be on-site for support, available to make small adjustments, and tweaks.

Sets
Different sets and locations were used in the filming and required the design team be present to make sure everything was working during production.
