The Lo-res Car

Lores is a concept based on breaking down complex objects to their simplest forms. Lowering the resolution of physical and virtual objects. The goal of this project was to create a drivable sculpture. In this case, the starting car model was the classic Lamborghini Countach.

Form
The sources of inspirations for the design and execution ranges from Dutch sculptor John Körmeling, to John Lautner’s Sheats-Goldstein Residence, and Aston Martin Bulldog concept car.

CAD
Starting point was the volume to which we started to design the chasis. Vehicle should fit two people sitting in a tandem setup.

Chasis
Next was to place the electric propulsion system, and batteries.

Frame
The stainless steel frame was welded together, and the structure is connected by hinges, designed to be lifted with an actuator.

Bodywork
The frame is covered with tinted plexiglass, attached with black silicone adhesive. The tinted glass makes it hard to see inside the vehicle, but visibility from within the car is clear at every angle due to the relatively thin beams.

Lights
LED lights are installed on the frame from inside. They are only visible when switched ON, otherwise hidden behind the tinted glass.

Linear actuators
The frame can be lifted up by a button on the dashboard or by a remote. The linear actuators that lift the body adds a dramatic kinetic sculptural quality. When the body lifts up, it reveals the interior and is the only way to enter the vehicle.

Dashboard
Interior reveals a clean dashboard and a gauge cluster that shows speed and distance driven. The simplified steering wheel matches the design DNA of the vehicle, and seats with leather padding. The car lights can are controlled by switches on the driver’s right side.

Interior
The seats are made with 5mm folded and welded steel sheets, with padded leather cushions and upholstery.

Finalization
After all bugs were fixed on the first prototypes, three more cars were made (and counting) to ship to museums and UN stores, to promote the idea of simplicity in car design.

Recognition
One of to most notable recognition for the car was being listed at the Grand basel as the most forward thinking concept and notion of the future in the form of functional sculpture.

Press
Lo-res car was featured in number of music videos. The biggest and the most exposure was in Kendrick Lamar feat. Rich the Kid - My Freezer. Car received strong recognition in the art, design and car world for its different, exceptional, standing out look. To name a few Wallpaper Magazine, Dezeen, Cardesignnews. Car was exposed in Art Basel amongst with other historically recognized cars - historical milestones in design. Car was also shown in Petersen automotive museum exhibition with another designer - Joey Ruiter.
